Thunder Claps are ILLEGAL

Its is that time of the year where many would fork out some dough to have some fun.

The sights and sounds of firecrakers always set young and old at awe. In Brunei we have one off cases of our young ones hospitalised for mishandling of these powerful 'toys'. I know many kids in out neighbouring countries are creative enough to make their own 'bomb' or 'meriam buluh'. But the end result usually is not so encouraging. But every year these kids do not learn. Losing fingers, an arm or even a leg would not scare them.

I have experienced a 'badil papan' blow up in my hand when I was a boy and luckily there was no severe injury to my fingers. It didn't stop me from playing 'badil' or firecracker but I was more cautious.

Yesterdays paper quoted some of the legal stuff which the general public are allowed to play and I hope everyone one especially parents of young children took sometime to read
the article because it was very informative.

I do not want to be a scrooge and deny these kids the fun that many of us had with firecrackers but am just giving some food for thought.

The approved fireworks include rocket parachute, butterfly, happy boom, electric sparklers, thunder rocket and Saturn missiles battery.

Police also issued nine categories of fireworks and firecrackers not permitted for sale such as ceremony shell, small festival ball, display shell, handle elesgroket, thunder clap, ground cakes, 40,0008 small festival balls, w6678 circoblit handle and elesg rocket.

A ban was imposed on such items to safeguard the public as these firecrackers produce an explosive sound and their debris can hurt people and cause damage to properties.

The sale of unauthorised fireworks and firecrackers is an offence under the Arms and Explosives Act Chapter 58, and those found guilty will face a fine of $1,000.

I did not know 'Thunder claps' were illegal. I love thunder claps. Oh well! In the spirit of the coming festive season Why not!!! But make sure safety is numero uno.
