Teaching Practice - Third Year Ba Ed TESL Major

As a requirement for a Bachelors of Education in Universiti Brunei Darussalam, undergrads are required to go on a 'Teaching Practice' or 'TP' in real classroom in school around Brunei. Each undergrad will be assigned a school and will stay there to teach and be observed and assessed by the assigned Co-Operating Teacher or CT and the Universiti assigned Supervisor for a duration assigned by the Universiti.

Back when I was still an undergrad we had two separate teaching practice sessions. My TP was six weeks during our 'summer' long semester break in my third and final year. So we were kind of annoyed that our holiday time was taken away from us.

My first TP was at Maktab Sains in 2002. They were occupying the current S.M.Rimba school while waiting for the renovation work to finish at the current school along Jalan Muara. It was a daunting idea to be sent to a school where you had the best students in Brunei grouped together in every class.

I was given two Form 2 classes and my CT was this old lady who used to be a principal for a grammar school in London. She was so old I could barely hear her. I do not know how her students were able to listen to her. She was nice and she gave me a week to observe her classes and showed me the ropes. I mean I had never taught in a real class so having a week to settle in was crucial to settle my nerves.

I remember the first time I was introduced to the classes. I recalled weird stares and felt like having arrows shot through me with their eyes. One class had a royal family member which made it even more awkward. However, she was kind enough to let me just call her by her name.

I made some quick notes that the boys liked to do things by themselves and there was no communication in the class and especially with the girls. I designed group activities and indirectly forced the boys to sit with girls to get some social interaction going.

Some boys opened up, while others just did their own thing. The girls made efforts to interact with the boys. Guess I was just pushing my them too hard. But I slowly gained the respect of the boys when I tapped into their interest and spoke their language.

Talking about music always helps, plus rumor started spreading around that a radio deejay was one if the TP teachers in school. *Gulp* My Students found out about it so most of them started to be extra nice to me. 'Sir play me a song when you go on air please Sir!'

I learned that you have to earn your stripes in class. Students look at you as a walking dictionary, however, we accept that we are not and we do not have answers to everything. Kids know that, we just need to keep reminding them once in a while that we too are human and we make mistakes.

As a future educator, students can smell if you are nervous or not. Once they figure out if you are, then be prepared for attitude. But if you are gleaming with confidence, students will realise how approachable you are.

You pick up a few things as you teach. You start realising what works and what doesn't. Your CT and Supervisors are there to support you and advice you. Take whatever advice that throw at you. It is for your own good. Never take it as criticism because teaching requires practice. It is not a talent like singing or dancing. I requires careful planning and execution and practice makes perfect. I do not believe it when people say that they were born to teach.

Enough about classroom environments. More in the second part when I share my second TP at Maktab Duli in my final year.

How to socialise / interact in the staffroom especially with the, in my case, English department and administration and other teachers?

- Smile. Its a great ice breaker. A smile allows others to warm their way into a conversation with you by following your smile with a 'Hello!' or 'Hi!'. Trust me when I say this, teachers expect you to break the ice. They want to know if you can 'fit' in with the rest of the pack. First impressions say a lot about the person.

- Never be afraid to ask. If you have trouble with something, just ask. We constantly remind our kids to never be afraid to ask yet we know that the new teachers and TP teachers are afraid to ask. We have to instill within us 'You practice what you preach'. Teacher love to share ideas and will always be willing to lend a helping hand.

- Get to know the Head of Department and Assistant HOD. They have more insight and they will be more that willing to help you settle in. They want to make sure you have a great TP experience and to ensure that you don't change you mind about teaching as a career.

- Mingle with the Admin. Make it a point to know the Principal and deputies and senior masters and mistresses and clerks. If they like you they may want to get you back there after you graduate. However, if that does not happen you would have left a lasting impression on them to know the potential you have. Again, it is all part of a learning process.

- Record book. Now this area I failed to pick up. My lesson plans were never really checked by my CT. I only provided lesson plans for lessons when my CT or Supervisor came over to observe me. They did not even ask for a record of my lesson plans. Trust me, learning and practicing to have a good record of lesson plans and marks will go a long way.

I think I got a 'B' for my TP. I had pick up a lot of useful tips and I had a memorable TP in MS. My students from the classes have moved on to Uni and I'm glad some of them remember me, even though I was only there for a few weeks.

Overall my first TP was a success and just sing along to the tune and you'll find that teaching is easier than you think. Well, sometimes it is.

What is the future going to be like?

So what will the future look like? From a teaching perspective, honestly, No idea at all!!

Then what do I teach in class?

There was this very interesting video which I have used in a previous post on edbrunei.org, a TED.Tv production entitled Do Schools Kill Creativity? by Sir Ken Robinson - an insightful and humorous presentation about what educators are doing in class to prepare their students for the future and challenges the ideology of education systems all over the world.

Honestly, have you ever wondered about the future? Where will you be? What will you be doing? What kind of jobs will your kids do? Will you be flying cars to work?

The future for all we know is, as always, unpredictable. One day, someone discovers a way to live in the sky, then everyone will come up with ideas to build things in the sky. A whole new industry develops overnight. New jobs are created and stakeholders are pushing universities and governments to change their education system to cater for this 'unpredicted' change.

The Future, ladies and gentlemen, are unforeseen events that happen for a reason. Educators can do so much in the classroom, lecture theaters and laboratories and still have no clue as to what these young minds that they are nurturing will end up becoming in the future.

There is hope that gone were the days of dreams jobs like doctors, lawyers, architects and engineers. While jobs like Application Developers, Software designers, Video Graphic designers, Web designers will become to be the 'New Dream Jobs'.

As educators we need to prepare ourselves for this, for the benefits of our future generation. There is only so much that can be covered in the classrooms and our ministry's effort to adapt a more 'independent' learning approach should not be taken negatively.

Teacher's jobs are not made any easier even though students do a lot of self discovery because not every house hold owns a PC or laptop and even if they own one, they may not have internet access at home.

Perhaps we still have a long way to go before every student in Brunei will one day only have to bring a laptop to school and teachers need only bring their tablets to class and the whole concept of 'teaching' becomes a 'learning' experience for both the teacher and students.

Who would have predicted that blogging could generate income and turn into a successful business? We just have to look at our local blogging superstar @ranoadidas as an example.

Come what may, we have no control over the future. However, we can prepare ourselves for and challenge our young ones to dream on and remind them that the sky's the limit. Possibilities are everywhere.

Welcoming Myself Back!

I have to admit that I normally spend my Saturday afternoons with my wife and son. We would go out and have afternoon tea or just browse around. Basically spend the whole afternoon with my two most precious people.

Yet I found myself driving to The Law and Court Building (http://www.agc.gov.bn/) yesterday afternoon to attend an interesting public forum entitled "A Blogger's Rights and Responsibilities & Other Legal Issues on the Use of Social Media in Brunei Darussalam"

The talk was presented by @jefrirahman and Hjh Rahayu respectively. You may find more articles on here and here.

In light of this forum, I hope that their plans to do some more public awareness and have some kind of a roadshow to school can further educate our younger generation. The internet has become more and more accessible and even if they do not have PCs or laptops. They have access to social medias like msn and facebook via their mobile phones.

We all have our roles to play. Be it a blogger or twitter-holic, we are bounded by laws and regulations the moment we agreed to their terms and conditions. As mentioned by Ahmad Jefri, 'Do you read the terms & conditions before you agree?' Applause to those you have because it seems like such a daunting task to read the small fine print.

Honestly I do miss blogging even though I am more active on twitter and my tumblr. Blogging was always a good way to practice my writing and sharing thoughts and ideas.

Feels slightly weird but happy to be typing away.

To migrate or to stay?

In a attempt to revive a once active blog that has been on a hiatus for a very long while now. I find myself contemplating to either stick with blogger or migrate to wordpress.

I have been using my tumblr and I am actively tweeting nowadays.

I wonder if this is just a spur of the moment thing. I do enjoy tumblr and had hoped that I would move there permanently.

Inspired Moment

I remember looking the Apple Crunchers at the Foodie bloggers Event. Since I was so stuffed from all the food, I did not try it. But I am sure it tasted great.

Apple + Peanut Butter + Cereal = a good combo anytime.

So while I was driving, I was thinking about the Banana Fritters with a scoop of Vanilla Ice cream from Taurean Cafe. Sia Sia Pun. Then I also thought about making Apple Crunchers to munch on.

Then I had a wicked idea. Why not make something like Apple Crunchers.

At home, Wifey was looking through this cook book for children which I bought after Hameez was born. A cook book for babies to young children. We have been following the book from day one since Hameez could eat and we kinda follow the schedule.

Anyways, there are a couple of banana related recipes and I was inspired.

Banana coated with Honey and Cereal

First get some cereals together. My choices are Coco Crunch and some Wholegrain cereal and some almond flakes.

A place for the honey.

and the most important ingredient, the star of the dish, BANANAS! hehehe. You may choose to cut it into half. I prefer it that way.

Firstly, dip Bananas in Honey and then dip to the plate with the cereal mix.

Then place on tray.

Finish everything and stick in the Oven at high for 5 minutes.

Let it out to cool and put in the fridge over night.

I will update tomorrow when I get to buy Vanilla Ice Cream and take proper picture.

P.S: Do not be discouraged if the cereal mix does not stick. Just keep on trying to put as many cereal mixes as you can. You can always add more once its on the try and ada more honey if you like.

My weekend

I have been meaning to blog about my weekend but I have spend the past few days and nights working to finish a whole lot of work.

Alhamdulillah I managed to settle everything during lunch time today.

Sunday morning I took part in the Special Olympics Walkathon which was an 8 km walk from Taman SOAS to the National Stadium at Berakas.

My wife dropped me off early in the morning and I made my way to look for a registration form or some sort. I met Reeda there and he was kind enough to tell me where to register. Thanks Reeda and love the picture :D

I met some familiar faces as well and the aerobics was fun but kinda difficult to do on the field. But I still enjoyed it. We started the walk and I looked up to the sky and had a gut feeling it was going to rain. I prayed and hoped it would just pass by.

In to the junction at the old Post Office building when a familiar face greeted me as my ears were listening full blast to the sounds of BackStreet Boys. I said 'Hi' and then I felt it. A blob of rain drop on my shoulder and in a split second it poured cats and dogs. I ran for shelter and hid my iPhone. I looked for a plastic bag to save my phone. Couldn't manage to find one, but I was really determined to continue and finish.

I bumped into Rano and asked if he had a plastic bag I could borrow. It was kind of Rano to offer me his raincoat but I just wanted to save my precious one. :D

A million thanks to Rano for keeping my iPhone when I continued my walkathon. I really appreciate it Bro. I owe you one Bro.

I walked and ran for some parts of the walkathon. I am happy to say I managed to finish the 8K walkathon in 53 mins.

At the Bazaar, I met Pablo at the Foodie Bloggers Recipe Book Booth and bought my copy.

I also purchased a 'Special Olympics - Be a Fan' Black Tee because I was soaking wet from the rain and the walkathon.

While waiting for my wife to come to the bazaar, I browsed around and met Yani and her students booth. I bought two books from there and one is an autographed copy signed by the author himself and I got it on sale.

I also bought my DPMM Fan Jersey which I had asked G-Nul to get it autographed by the DPMM Heroes. I specifically asked for the Coach's autograph. I think he has made a huge impact on the players and that has so far been translated on the field by DPMM FC.

My Wife had to work on that Sunday and I dropped her off at her office and I went home to rest and managed to get some sleep :D

Around 2, went to Kilanas to My Wife's grandparents place for a family get together. We bought the Chocolate Mud Cake from Country Patch.

In the afternoon, I had a footy friendly at MD Field against the Original DPMM FC from the early days at MD. They called themselves the 'DPMM - Reunion'. Even Ali Momin of the former national team played. A star studded line up, even at their late 30's were still impressive and dominated the match from Kick off.

I reckon we could do better, if they don't mind a rematch. Just being hopeful :D

At night, I continued to do my work and while I was engrossed in my report writing. Something magical happened.

My Baby Boy, Hameez who was exactly 1 year 2 months and 9 days old walked by himself. He knows how to walk as I stated in my last post with the need of a 'driver'. But that night he just walked by himself.

It was amazing. From watching him glide out from his Mother's womb to the delivery table and watching him grow and his antics and his mumbling to the very sight of him walking.

Alhamdulillah. Allah and his mysterious ways work wonders and I am blessed to have a loving and caring wife and also blessed to have a healthy and beautiful Baby Boy.

I now will patiently wait for him to utter his first words.

Unusual Saturday Afternoon

Its going to be another long and lonely weekend and week ahead for Hameez and myself.

Our leading lady is missing in action as she just boarded the first flight out this morning to Singapore, after just arriving back from KL yesterday morning, and a few transit stops and insya allah landing in Da Nang, Vietnam by now.

I am still waiting for her to text me. So far she's texted me before boarding the flight to Ho Chi Minh and before getting on a domestic flight to Da Nang.

The usual Saturday afternoon would be, me coming home from work during lunch time and be greeted by my wife and me calling out Hameez's name several times till he looks at me just once to acknowledge me as his eyes returns, fixated, on the squarish coloured box full of animation. Yes I am referring to the telly showing channel 613 on Astro, Hameez's favourite channel, Play House Disney.

After lunch, we'd go out just for the sake of going out, but most of the time we are just running a few errands.

Today, however I felt an emptiness.

So its was just Hameez and me going out to buy cat food and some other things.

We went to Hameez's fave superstore, HH Manggis Mall, thanks so much to who ever invented escalators. His eyes automatically lights up when he sees one and you can see the true expression of joy on my baby boy's face.

Its his 'playground'. he's not even shy to scream out his baby talk. He really loves it there.

Today I used the mini trolley and Hameez was eager to push it around. We moved slowly as I held on to the handle bar and him pushing the mini cart. Yes another toy and another reason to there. Hahaha.

Baby's surprise parents everyday. Yesterday Hameez turned 1 year and 2 months, eventhough he's yet to walk by himself but slowly he's making the effort. Managing a few steps before admitting to defeat and getting down on all fours.

He will walk by himself soon, without the need of a designated 'driver' also known as the person he holds on to when he wants to walk around, as the title was coined by his mommy. Wifey and myself both agree to just let him take his sweet time.

They grow up so fast, Babies I mean. Just the other day, I was browsing through some pictures from last year and Hameez has grown so much. He's still my Baby Boy.

*sigh*

iLike my iPhone3G - One Wish Granted

Ever since Apple came out with the idea of introducing a phone into the a mobile phone market dominated by Nokia, Sony Ericsson, Samsung and others manufacturers, many were skeptical.

With the introduction of the iPhone and now the iPhone 3G, I guess those skeptics must be eating their own shoes by now.

The sleek design and easy to operate functions of the iPhone has won many hearts and is still continuing to warm up to many others.

When I first laid eyes on it, I knew I had to own one.

Had a first glance and feel of the iPhone from a friend who sold me the idea of converting to Mac. Again he did not fail to fetch the idea of acquiring an iPhone myself.

With so many free Apps available and access to these Apps are just a few clicks away, everyone who owns one can enjoy so many games and informative applications.

All in all a truly great phone with Star quality. I am be exaggerating but buy an iPhone and you just instantly added a cool factor to yourself but if you are already cool, lets just say you have become ever 'cooling' :D

I have been staring at this page for a while now

Expressing thoughts and ideas here used to be easy, flowing smoothly like vanilla sundae coming out of the sundae machine at McDonald's.

So many things have happened lately, My baby boy turned One and he just keeps on growing and keeps on amazing my wife and myself everyday.

Its true when they say a child is 'a bundle of joy', something to treasure and nurture and a part of you.

Hameez is currently trying to get the courage to walk by himself. He's not having any difficulty hanging on to the tables or anything where he could grab when he's standing. I only offer him my finger and he'll grab on to it and just walk away and having me around for support.

I went on a short family vacation to KK with my family, just myself, Zara and Hameez. Just us three and I think we all had fun. Hameez was so lively.

We took the midnight flight on Thursday night and we had to go to the airport at 10-ish.

Hameez usually goes to sleep at nine but that night he was up all night. He was awake in the plane and he was so alert. You could see in his eyes how he was so eager to explore what was around him and what he was about to experience.

But by the time we got out of the airport and looked for transportation to our hotel, he was already sleepy and fell asleep on the drive to our hotel.

We stayed at Le Meridian and Hameez woke up his mommy the next day. By the time I woke up he was laughing and crawling around the room.

We went to nearby shops and OneBorneo when we were there and also did a bit of retail therapy.

We realised how much Hameez loved going on a vacation because the moment we arrived back home he looked bored and not in the mood. He was quiet and we tried to make him laugh and gave him his fave toys and still didn't work. Kinda like he was experiencing post-vacation trauma. I really wonder what he would say if he could talk. He He He

So I am currently planning another getaway with just Zara and Hameez and myself. A place dubbed and the 'Lion City' hehehe.

I cannot wait for that trip and the GSS starts on 29th May. In case you don't know what GSS is, its the best thing ever on this side of the world, GSS = GREAT SINGAPORE SALE!!!

Being all hyped up about my up-coming trip I totally forgot my very own baby sister's Birthday

Abang is so sorry Ting.

Wished we could have been there to celebrate your birthday with you.

Ka Zara and Abang will take you out during the holidays to celebrate alright. Promise.

Mental Note: I need to update my calender with all birthday's.

So if anyone wants me to greet them on their birthday, just leave your birthday on the tagboard and I will save it in my calender.

I am still playing around with the applications on my 'Angelina' [name for my macbook] updating my calender and address book.

I am still waiting for my SE to breakdown so I have a super valid reason to get an iPhone.

But am in no hurry. My phone, though being bitten away slowly and drooled all over by my Baby boy, is still working perfectly fine.

My book reading has taken a bit of a pit stop since I was busy with the National Day celebrations and all. Hopefully with get back into reading.

Once again, I would like to apologise to my Baby Sister, Adillah, Abang is very sorry and I promise I will get you your birthday presents. Love you so much Ting. <3

Exactly this day, one year ago, one of the most amazing thing happened in my life.

My wife and myself were gifted with a Baby Boy and we named him, Mohammad Danial Hameez.

How he has grown so so much and even though he has yet to learn to walk by himself or even able to partly communicate with his mother and myself, we love him endlessly.

The one who puts a smile on our faces in the morning when he wakes us up. His smile with his parted teeth and his sighing, his crying, his screaming are all so adorable.

One For My Baby

I finally finished reading the second book by Tony Parson.

DigiMetal - I would recommend Man and Boy to anyone, be it man or lady. It could perhaps give you an idea of how a man thinks and feels.

One for my Baby is a good read, however it did not touch me a much as Tony Parson's first book.

The character in the story, Alfie is an English as a foreign language teacher who had a stint in Hong Kong and found love there. However, his fairytale love life did not end happily ever after.

A tragic accident leads him back to mourn and sulk over his loss. He goes back home to London and struggles to kick start his life again.

So many changes happen in and around his life, he makes a dramatic change and becomes someone he never thought he could become as he starts to sleep around, meaningless sex without commitment.

Seen through the eyes of Alfie, you feel how he goes through his life without love and as he copes with all the destruction that happens around him. His life philosophies intrigue me and 'One for my Baby' is an enjoyable read indeed.

Sudu - I read the Kite Runner awhile back. I will have a read through and do a quick review. That book gave me nightmares.

This book made me cry

I have neglected reading for a while, perhaps and understatement, for a very long while to be precise. Until last December when a close friend persuaded my wife and myself to read 'Twilight' to prepare ourselves before we all went to watch the movie.

I remember the big fuss it made at my work place, a colleague was also intrigued by the hype this book generated. So I gave it a shot, I rediscovered a love, a love for reading.

The excitement, the suspense and the twists made me miss reading even more.

I used to bury my face in books, novels to be exact when my siblings would be fighting over the video game they would play. I remember saving my money to buy books from my favourite author, John Grisham.

So in the midst of my lost love for reading, I made frequent stops at a nearby bookshop, also a bookshop where I get my monthly issue of 'Mens Health' the singapore edition.

A book cover caught my attention, Man and Boy. Being new and still learning about fatherhood, I assumed that the book would bring some insight for my shortcomings, balancing my work and activities and being a Father.

The reviews on the back cover, like many other books, were all Good! Exciting! Wonderful! except for one, on the front cover, 'I cried five times and laughed out loud four' James Brown, Observer. And I think to myself? Really?

Flipping through the first few pages, this book was a bestseller and millions of copies sold and translated in to 38 different languages. I became more excited.

I bought two other books but I was really looking forward to reading it.

I could not put the book down once I started reading it.

Did it make me cry? It did. The writer, Tony Parson, had succeeded in squeezing this heart of mine and made me, not just drop a tear, but really crying.

Did it make me laugh? Indeed it did. Smacked a huge smile across my face. Such a cunning writer. He knew how to set the mood.

Amazing how I was able to put myself into the character's shoes.

The story maybe one sided, maybe portrays the character as egoistic and immature and perhaps chauvinistic to the female gender. But all in all, a wonderful read and I am hooked.

I am currently in the middle of reading his second book, One for my Baby and am hoping to buy the sequel to Man and Boy, which is Man and Wife.

So if you happen to have read the book already, tell me how you felt reading it and what do you think about it?

Give it a go, you might just enjoy it.

I remembered when I first started going to the gym. I was full of hope, full of energy and full of determination.

I had a goal in mind and that was to lose weight.

5 months later, I had 11% body fat as measured by the Gym Consultant, Tony @ JPMC and I was wearing a size 34 and wore M sized Tee Shirts.

People say you shave off a few years off your face when you lose weight. I know I did.

I was fit, energetic, always up for any game that involves running.

I had managed to transform my life in a few months with discipline.

I watched what I ate, I counted my calorie intake everyday in my head.

I took my weight lost for granted and sort of neglected running and going to the gym. I only do it in during what ever free time or whenever I feel like it.

So over the months I have gained back the weight which I lost. I never thought I would gain back so much.

I have not blown up like a blow fish would but rather last december I took part in a health check up and even though the nurse said I was healthy but the number on the weighing scale triggered an alarm in my head.

I need to take a step back and look at my life.

Lucky for me, all this discovery was in the last month of last year. So I made losing weight amongst the things I want to achieve in 2009.

We can only plan ahead and sometimes we do not really know what the future will bring.

A blogger once had this notion on his blog, 'For something to become a routine, one needs 14 day to do the same thing for it to become a habit.'

In am currently on day 8 of my return to habit mode. I miss running and I remembered I once was addicted to running. Just kept on running and running. I had this urge to run everyday. I once took an online bulimic test and the results confirmed I had a minor case of bulimia. If I did not react to it I will surely suffer from it. Alhamdulillah I found out about it.

Now I am slowly getting my determination back. My struggles will soon become a habit and running will not be a chore but an addiction.

Some sacrifices I have to make; No rice but only occasionally but preferable to avoid if necessary. No eating after 8 p.m. I usually cook my own food.

I feel like I have lost a little weight already, my jeans feel a bit lose so that just fuels my determination even more.

I do short runs daily averaging 3 - 4 Km runs and I shave off 10-25 seconds everyday.

From experience, its all in the mind. Every activity, I believe, requires not just physical strength but mental strength as well. If you body tells you to give up, tell your mind to be strong.

Believe in yourself. Adidas quotes "Impossible is nothing".

I've started running again.

Doing short to 3 km runs for the past week.

I've stared my diet of no rice but I have to be honest there have been a couple of occasions that could not be avoided.

But I feel great.

I just want to get fit and shed the weight that I have gained over the year.

Today I managed to shave off 14 seconds of my time from yesterday.

I ran the same route today and I know I can get faster.

But I want to run longer.

I need to do more training and watch my calorie intake.

Will update some more soon.

I am not one to boast about my love for Man Utd but I got quite an ear full when Man Utd were beaten by Derby in the first leg.

The Title race is wide open now. Two games in hand and hopefully Man Utd will be able to capitalise and get all six points.

Wenger claims the EPL has lost his magic. Benitez is more vocal after his surgery.

The EPL is just about to heat up and that is why its the BEST league in the World, eventhough I have never been to Manchester or will I ever live there but I am a support them with pride, win or lose, A Red devil is always a Red Devil!!

I once read somewhere that day dreams happen when someone is either working or relaxing.

The ability to ease one's mind into a world of their own creation. But as we often learn time and time again, somethings are not meant to last forever. Just like dreams or daydreams.

An imagination, the subconscious mind playing tricks to suit one's fantasy.

Students have a tendency to forget about the world they live in now and be transported to another world where they have magical powers or live in an enchanted wonderland. One cannot really blame students if they simply fly away during a lesson. Perhaps the teacher might be rambling about something so fast they could not follow anything or maybe a late night sleep or they do it unconsciously.

Being an adult now, do we still have day dreams? I have been pondering about this since this morning. My lesson today were about Daydreams and I cannot really remember the last time I had a daydream.

I asked my girls, "If you were given a choice, where would you like to be right now?

Majority from both my classes said "In bed, sound asleep"

What happened to the adventure? the suspense?

Big Boy Toy

I have been looking for a new camera phone since my K800i's battery went bonkers on me. Hence an excuse to go phone hunting. What could possibly top my K800i which has been my saviour once too many.

The SE C905 was the initial predecessor but after reading so many reviews,its main competitor caught my attention. A phone I would normally would not consider.

But after reading reviews and much consideration I was hooked.

The Samsung Innov8 has all the features that I wanted except the fact it is not a touch screen. But everyone has to learn to give and take.

I have not really utilized the whole phone. I still need to go to B-Mobile and get them to set up the phone for me because they don't do forwarded sms settings anymore.

Its a bit bulky but it feels slick on my hands. The keypads have a great feel to it and the centre touch pad which works like a mouse. Navigation is so easy and when I surf with the phone the screen size helps. Connection via wi-fi is fast, well faster than my cousin's Nokia E90. He he.

I gotta jet to work now.

It didn't take much to convince me that I wanted something new, something rad, something that makes one go 'aaaaaa~' at the sight of it.

Ladies and Gentlemen, Boys and Girls, Children of all ages and Mac Lovers - I have crossed the holy grail of computer technology and have stepped on to a new horizon. Where everything looks flashy and stunning without much effort.

I have converted to Mac. And in the words and song of a once popular hit single and McD jingle,

"I'm Lovin' It~".

I'm still learning how to use this wonderful machine. The illuminated keyboard is very helpful as I am typing this in the darkness of my bedroom with my wife and baby boy sound asleep. Before I would have to squint or use a torch light to help to type this out. But those days are gone.

I can praise this near flawless and near perfect machine forever but I will just let you to ponder as how good it actually is. Because I am madly in love with new 'toy' of mine.

The other new toy will be reserved for a different post. No its not an iPhone. But is it a phone. Hint - Voted best phone in Asia 2008, under which category I am not so sure.

New years always bring hopes and dreams and wishes to every one. All wanting to experience the best in life.

Two Thousand Eight was a roller coaster ride for myself. But the past is history and let bygones be bygones.

I took a long break from blogging. After my Grandfather passed away last year, I was caught up in a tied of emotions.

I tried to keep an interest. I skipped a lot of my daily habit, including Running. I guess I am a pretty emotional guy to allow my feelings to overcome my passion.

Towards the end of 2008, I started to pick up a book again. 'Twilight' was the book of choice as my friends wanted us to read it before we all went to watch the movie. I got hooked.

I missed the sensation I felt from reading, the drama, the suspense, the twists.

I went on a book spree. Well I didn't really buy a whole store. But I picked up a couple of books along with the sequel to Twilight, 'New Moon'.

A book caught my attention, 'Man and Boy' by Tony Parson.

In the whole month of December, in the midst of all the studying for my GO and FR exam and at the same time helping to organise the 'Kembara Bakti Belia 2008', I managed to squeeze three books.

I am slowly regaining the love of Reading. One of the reasons why I became an English teacher, to share the love of reading.

Part of the all new approach to blogging, I would like to share my two cents by sharing book reviews and cooking experiments. Plus I will try to update on an exercise regime and I hope to shed back some of the weight I have gained back since I lost some before I got married.

So I will do a review of 'Man and Boy' by Tony Parson soon.

Till then.

I guess it feels good to be back and will get the blog up and running soon.

I'm still new to playing this well known puzzle the Rubik's cube. I learnt to finish the first layer myself. Then I got stuck and went to look for help online only to get myself even more confused. I tried to read but it got even more confusing. I seeked help from a student but I didn't get it. Then I seeked the 'Guru' of the Rubik's cube, Razimi, to seek for guidance. He was happy to help. My friend Amir helped as well. They helped my finish the second layer and before they helped me finish the final layer, I had to do it myself. I finished it and then I showed to finish it. I've managed to finish the puzzle three times now. But It still takes me quite a while to finish it. It took me four days to learn the tricks to solve this puzzle and I am proud of my achievement.

I just started running again for the past couple of weeks. With the fasting month approaching fast, I needed to get my routine going. I am planning to run every night, god willing, during the fasting month after tarawikh prayers. I did not renew my membership at the gym but I'm here today to see how off I am from my pace. I aimed to finish 5 k and half way through the run I felt like quitting. But I pushed myself and I made it. It felt great. I finished 5 k in 38 mins which is way off from my usual time. But its alright, my motivation is back. I'm slowly getting addicted again, addicted to running

We just finished watching Ayat Ayat Cinta and I think it is absolutely a brilliant movie. Hers who is not a fan of malay movies was very impressed and she enjoyed it alot. Started with lunch at Frat's Picol with Hers and Danial. After that we made a quick detour to Gadong properties. From there we headed to the Mall. Danial was asleep in his carrier. An earlier post was deleted on the early morning of 20th June 2008.

My late grandfather Pg Hj Damit Pg Md Salleh had already been in the hospital for a while. The PHD was always there everyday and night. During the school holidays I spent my mornings there with my cousins and sibling to accompany my Nini Banu.

The eve of the 19th, after the usual Hajat prayers, we all went up and opted for a late dinner. He went inside the MICU to recite the yassin for my late Nini Aji. But he came out not long after he had entered because the nurse told him to go out.

My late Nini was experiencing spasms. My cousin Fizul felt uneasy and we stuck around for a bit. After about 20 minutes we decided to go down to the canteen to have dinner.

After dinner we all went up and my uncle asked us to stick around for a bit while we went to get something. Then all of a sudden my other uncles and auties were asked to go inside the MICU. I remember it was around half past 10.

We got worried. Then my Aunt came out and she was crying and told me to call my Mother who had just left. I tried to call. I remember I started to cry. I kept on dialing but no one picked up.

I was even more frustrated.

I couldn't wait. I went inside the MICU. My Aunties were crying. My late Nini's stats was slowly decreasing.

We all started to gather around his bed...

My late Nini Aji passed away the same night.

Eventhough I have been preparing myself for that moment. Eventhough we all knew this was eventually going to happen.

I realised how much I missed my late Nini.

Tears streaming down and it seemed never ending.

Everytime I am alone I think of him. I pray for him.

My fellow readers (If I have any) this is the reason why I had blocked anyone from viewing this blog.

I was protecting my younger sibling who was about to sit for her first semester exam down under in Adelaide. My parents gave strict instructions not to mention anything on my blog.

Abang is so sorry Lina. I wanted to tell you so badly. I really did but to cause you emotional stress at a time when you had your future to deal with. Abang has been there before and it is not the kind of mental state you would want to be in. I love you Lina. I hope you understand.

Well for me it was something that made me question myself late last night, how did I get myself involved in this in the first place. I was approached and I agreed. Thought it would be a good experience and turns out no matter how nerve wrecking it actually was. I believe my public speaking confidence has gone up to a totally different level. Part time Chef - I present my Grilled Chicken

Ingredients:

2 Lemons
Paprika
Curry Powder
Parsley
Mint
Herbs
Salt
Pepper
Olive Oil
Garlic

Mix everything together
Can really help you with the measurements of the ingredients I used because I cook at with a sense that I do not know comes from where
After mixing the ingredients mix with desired chicken cuts
Keep in tight sealed container and keep in fridge for a minimum of 60 minutes

Heat up grill or BBQ.

Just brush olive oil on BBQ. But if you are using an electric grill, you do not need to wipe any oil because the chicken is already coated with oil from the mixture earlier

For best result Cook each side for 3-4 mins before turning over

Outcome:
The Family liked it

I served it with mashed potates, mushroom gravy and carrots chopped like little sticks

Last night I received a phone call from my mother. Seemed like an odd time for her to call. I sensed something was wrong. I answered her call and she uttered words I did not expect to hear. My grandfather was rushed to the Emergency at RIPAS. I arrived at nine. When I arrived most of the PHD's were there already. My grandfather was in one of the rooms. He slipped in his bathroom when he was about to take his wudu'. My uncle kicked the bathroom door when he was in there for quite a while. After a CT scan around eleven, he was then admitted to the surgical intensive care unit. I have known him all my life and to see him in that state hurts so much. The Doctor who attended to my grandfather told my family that he has internal bleeding in his head from the fall. I stayed around till quarter to two with my cousins and uncle outside the ward. I pray for his recovery. I hope you will join me in praying for his recovery. Amin.

Last year before I got married I had an exercise regime.

I had a well balanced lifestyle.

I had a routine that I stuck to.

I exercised regularly, spending at least three hours at the gym and an hour on the treadmill.

Well that was last year.

I managed to cut my size from a 44 to a 34.

After getting married, priorities changed.

My lifestlye changed.

Hers was carrying our first born.

I started playing golf again and ignored my running.

Eventhough I continued my gym membership I rarely found the time to go to the gym.

I realised I had gained back some weight.

My clothes started to get tighter.

It was a wake up call.

I can barely run 5k on the treadmill nowadays.

I have been working out on the rowing machine lately.

The first term break was a kick start to my regime.

I am slowly adjusting back to my routine.

My eating routine to be exact.

I have managed to cut out rice from my daily food intake again.

Replacing it with other carbs for instance wholemeal bread.

I aim to start my running routine soon.

When? Hopefully by next month.

This was hard for me to accept initially but I have come to terms with it

I have gained back 5 kg and I am wearing a size 35 - 36 now.

I think of the positives and assume I have gained muscles Hahaha.

I am sure I can lose it again

I have done it before

This time I hope to reach my aim

I hope to share some of my simple recepies here.

I am still learning to be an Ayah.

I think I am doing an OK job.

Baby Danial is healthy at 5 kg plus and he will turn 2 months tomorrow 24th April.

A birthday gift idea

I came across this costume while googling for superhero costumes for a class project that I want to explain to my girls.

Visual aids are a big help in trying to get them interested plus a prize is also compulsory when ever a project pops up.

Anyways, the point is Hers and myself reckon that the costumes looks abso-toodle-ly adorable.

I can imagine Little Danial in it.

Hahaha.

So if anyone if thinking of getting Little Danial a gift for his birthday gift next year.

I turned chef this afternoon. Hers was hungry and wanted to eat something. She wanted either Pizza or mac and cheese. So I went off to buy the ingredients. While she attended to Danial I cooked the maccaroni. It has been awhile since I cooked but Hers is enjoying her helping and she says its better the Pizza Hut. Thank you wifey. :D

I got back from the gym and gave Danial his bath. I Love bathing him. I shampoo his hair. I clean his body, scrubing every part. I reckon he loves bathing because he's never cried during his bathing sessions. He's just finished feeding. I just patted and rubbed his back so he could burp. He fell asleep on my lap. It was so beautiful. Hers is now resting. I help her when ever I can. He's grown so much since he was born. His current weight is 4 kilos. His clothes fit nicely now. But give it a week or Two I reckon he'll grow out of it. But for now all I want to do is bite his cheeks. I am going to shave his hair soon. So when I clean shave his head. I am going to do the same for myself. Ha Ha Ha.

Danial just finished from his first clinic appointment. The nurse gave him a shot on his thigh. He screamed and turned blue. It was painful to watch. The nurse said his next shot during his next visit next month is the one which is bound to get him sick.

This Kids size Cantona era jersey was my first Baby clothing purchase when I went on my honeymoon. I was looking for last season's jersey and as I was browsing through the rack in a random sports shop at The Peninsula, I found that jersey Danial is wearing. I told Hers that it wouldn't hurt to prepare he he. Well what do you know, Danial was born nine months later. He is all rallied up for tonights battle of the Reds. All the best to both teams. May the best team win. I hope Man Utd wins, but if we don't it alright. Come on Man Utd, your latest and one of your youngest fan is cheering for you.

Back at the gym and I went on the rowing machine for sixty minutes. The outcome a ten k row but only managed to burn 550 calories. Will be doing a few laps before I hit the shower. Later

Danial has just finished feeding and now I am slowing rubbing his back for him to burp. He's going to get his night scrubbing and change him into his pjays. I can't really play with him because I'm having a very rare asthma attack. More updates on the young one soon.

Its that time of the year that feels mellow for a brief moment. All the hard work and time sacrificed is worth it. I enjoyed this years group. You guys were brilliant on stage. I thought we deserved more. But the judges thought otherwise. Win or lose all of You were brilliant. Its would have been sweeter to win but we shall keep on trying. At least we did our best and followed the rules.

Danial is now Two weeks and three days old. He's feeding well and pooping on a regular basis. Alhamdulillah so far he's a healthy boy. His next visit to be later this month on his one month old birthday. I will be on holiday then so I will get to take him to his appointment. My current message tone and ring tone is the recording I made of Danial crying for feeding time. I know I will miss it once he grows up. I love him to bits. Hers has been feeding and taking care of him well. I owe her so much. I will make sure she gets the best treatment when the time is right.
